SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records)

SAFER is the FMCSA public-facing carrier lookup system that displays motor carrier registration, operating authority status, insurance, and safety rating.

SAFER is searchable by DOT number, MC number, or carrier name at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov. The carrier snapshot page shows registration status, authority, fleet size, inspection and crash counts, and the most recent safety rating.

SAFER does not show CSA percentile scores; those are on the FMCSA SMS system at ai.fmcsa.dot.gov/sms. A complete vetting record references both SAFER and SMS snapshots.

Why this matters for freight brokers

SAFER is the primary lookup tool for confirming a carrier's operating authority and safety rating at the moment of booking. The snapshot, captured at booking, is the artifact a defense lawyer wants to introduce in court.
